10 API Trends Defining Payment Gateways

Commentary by Mike Trilli, GEM Product Manager

API Documentation is no longer a support tool but a signal of product readiness and a driver of adoption. If developers can’t find or understand a feature, they may assume it doesn’t exist or avoid it altogether. That assumption can delay integrations, stall launches, and lead to missed opportunities.

This is why TSG completes an API assessment each year for payment gateways participating in its Global Experience Monitoring (GEM) service and annually honors standout excellence and innovation

Using the 2025 assessment, we have uncovered ten key trends shaping how gateways are evaluated based on what they offer and how it’s communicated:

  • Self-Service or Bust: Developers expect to integrate without contacting support. Leading gateways deliver with self-service portals, instant sandbox access, modern SDKs, and clear versioning. Poor changelog hygiene erodes trust.
  • Security Clarity Drives Confidence: Features like tokenization and secure vaulting are essential, especially in healthcare and recurring billing. Overly technical or incomplete guidance often leads to misconfigurations, risk exposure, or abandonment.
  • SLAs as a Trust Signal: Transparent uptime metrics, contractual SLAs, and incident protocols are expected. When these are buried or missing, merchants may question a platform’s reliability, influencing their platform decisions.
  • Automate to Accelerate: ISVs and marketplaces want onboarding with minimal manual effort. Gateways that support API-driven setup and provide clear, structured documentation stand out.
  • Fraud Tools Need Better Guidance: As fraud evolves, merchants need defenses that learn and adapt in real time. Fragmented or unclear documentation often forces reliance on default settings that don’t meet modern risk standards.
  • Cross-Border Complexity Demands Simplicity: FX tools that support local currency display and home-currency settlement are valuable but only if clearly documented. Dispersed or outdated content increases compliance risk and slows adoption.
  • Alternative Rails, Familiar Friction: Support for ACH, SEPA, and other non-card methods is growing. Organizations adopt these payments to reduce costs and support faster settlement. Yet inconsistent documentation across providers undermines confidence and delays implementation.
  • Level III: Hidden Value: Level III data can reduce interchange fees, especially in Healthcare and B2B settings. However, unclear or inconsistent support often leads merchants to assume it’s unavailable, leaving savings on the table.
  • Surcharging Without the Risk: Many merchants want cost recovery capabilities, such as surcharging. Gateways offering surcharge APIs must also provide clear, compliant guidance. Incomplete documentation creates compliance uncertainty and discourages use.
  • Real-Time Payments, Real Gaps: RTP and FedNow offer faster settlement and cash flow, but merchants may not understand how to adopt these capabilities effectively without detailed integration materials.

Why API Documentation Is Now a Competitive Advantage

Precise, accessible documentation shapes how developers perceive a platform’s readiness. When features are hard to find or understand, they’re often assumed to be missing. Gateways that leverage external benchmarks and incorporate client feedback into their documentation strategy are better equipped to close gaps and avoid being overlooked before integration begins.

To evaluate competitiveness, providers should answer these critical questions:

  • Are we meeting best practices for documentation and feature support?
  • Are we incorporating external feedback into product and documentation strategies?
  • Are we investing in areas that drive future differentiation?

Gateways that answer “yes” to these questions will earn more business and trust.
