The Cloud Rules in Point-of-Sale Products, TSG Report Finds

It’s not a secret how cloud-based connectivity has changed payments, and now a quantifiable 78% of all point-of-sale product providers have at least one cloud-based POS product, finds the 2025 Directory of POS providers from TSG, an Omaha, Neb.-based payments advisory firm.

The directory, which catalogs more than 5,500 data points from more than 215 companies, also reveals that only 5% still market on-premise deployments. One benefit of cloud connectivity is that it makes it easier to push feature and security updates without having to update devices on-site individually. Cloud-based systems also can have lower upfront costs, TSG says. And mobile POS products are branching beyond retail and hospitality to find use cases in health care, logistics, and field services.

The directory does not rank providers, but lists them, the services they provide, payment-processing affiliations, and industries served among other attributes. It also includes the number of locations served, such as 140,000 Clover retailers using the POS system from Fiserv Inc. and Toast Inc. with more than 140,000 locations.
